Get out and move it!

We spent the afternoon hiking at Turkey Run today. I don't use that term ("hiking") lightly either, because y'all, this isn't your run-of-the-mill meandering trail. Most of the trails at Turkey Run are quite challenging; high cliffs, gorges, river, muddy creek beds between narrow walled canyons of rock, steps, steps, and more steps,...oh, and the ladders.

The ladders are sooo cool. Of course, you have to hike back through the walled canyons, THROUGH the muddy creek bed to get to them (okay, I suppose it's not always muddy, depending on when the last rain passed through, but seeing as it rained last night...uh huh.)
Cierah fell twice.
In the mud.
Swell.
Reece fell on concrete steps and just kind of hung upside down off the edge of them (thankfully not dangling over a cliff) until help pulled him back up.
Brandon, age TWO (stated with great amazement) was the recipient of this year's mini-hiker extraordinaire. The many steps, gorges, river banks, muddy creek bottoms, and yes even the ladders didn't bother that child one little bit. He *loved* it. Surivor Man, move over.
And Olivia is lucky she didn't bust her tail feathers because she hopped and jumped off every possible obstacle, daring a fall to take her (in spite of our umpteen pleas for her to stop before she learned a painful lesson called natural consequences.) Like a sure-footed mule (and definitely just as stubborn), she continued, never so much as a wobble.
The weather was gorgeous and it was the kind of family Sunday you just want to drink in until you can't drink any more. Glass half full? You betcha!

Nope...No way...Can hardly look at the ladders much less USE them! You have a brave family!!
Those ladders look scary! You inspire me to get my kiddos out for a little hike :)

That looks like a lot of fun, though those ladders would scare me for the kids!! I hear ya about how great taking a hike is. We went last Saturday and it was nice to enjoy nature and the kids LOVE it!
You obviously don't share my fear of heights.
Eeek!
And from the sound of it Brandon and Davis are brothers from anotha mutha...freakish coordination for 2 year olds! The pictures are beautiful...so glad you had a good time!
LOL, Jeanine. Yes, our 2yo's are definitely freakishly coordinated and adventurous. And like you, I am sooo afraid of heights (I get VERY dizzy.) The ONLY reason my fannie went up those ladders was because the hike back to them (through the muddy creek bed and tall, wet, somewhat scary canyon-like walls) was treacherous (because of the slippery mud, which went on and on for quite a distance.) The ladders became the lesser of two evils. Carl was with Brandon, then Reece, Olivia behind him, then Cierah, then me. And I just kept looking up to freedom. ;)
Blessings,
~Toni~
Oh, and the other reason I climbed the ladders? Because Carl said, "Nope, not going back the other way so get to climbin'." Grr!
That looks like an awsome place to go. My kids would LOVE it!
If you try to tell two-year-olds to save some of that energy for when they're 52 and need some of it back - well, they just won't believe you.
I love going hiking at Turkey Run! Carl just told me you're going to Indiana Beach Monday and starting school Tuesday. I didn't think you were going to start so soon. Anyway, we had a great scrapping weekend but missed you TONS...I got 21 pages done, girl! I need to talk to you about it sometime, though. Plus, I want you to judge a few contests since we couldn't seem to do it! Love you, sister!
Loved reading this! Way with words? You betcha!
I would love to hike along this trail. I live for places like this!
The ladders are amazing, but pose quite a danger if one should slip off it.
Wonderful place and an equally wonderful post.
Have a great weekend.
