Grab a face mask....
....because it's a bit dusty here In the Midst. I'm finding the pace of life quite fast (and fab too with the spring weather) at present. We're winding down our homeschool year, taking lots of field trips (why do all the good ones seem to come at the end of the year?), getting out of the house more as a family (now that the winter has lost its hold), oh and dodging earthquakes.
Yes, we felt the the great quake of 2008. That is, Carl felt it. And for those who are thinking, "Big whoop, I feel those babies all the time," let me assure you that here in corn alley (a.k.a. central Indiana), we most certainly do not. Carl said the windows rattled for around 7 seconds or so. He was just getting ready to wake me when it all stopped.
Yes. Okay, ye-ssss. I said "just getting ready to wake me" because, well, it seems I slept through the whole thing (head hung low). Just like I did during the big Ohio quake of '86 or '87 (fer shame, fer shame). That one was like a 3.2 magnitude (not really a quake, more like a shiver). Carl was in "the towers" at Cleveland State at the time and the students described the building as "moving."
Really?
From a shiver?
Meanwhile, back at Akron U, Toni was strolling the campus oblivious to the whole thing. Fellow Akron U students told me they felt it.
Nope. No rumbles noted on my own personal richter scale.
In fact I lived in San Francisco for a year and never felt so much as a shimmy (of course, the big quake of '89 hit there just 4 months after I moved. So grateful for dodging that seismic activity, I tell you.)
Heck, I even slept through the great Aztec Peroxide chemical blast of '93. Oh, wait! I didn't sleep through that. No, I convinced Carl that someone broke into our home in the middle of the night (what, with my bedroom door blasting open like that and all). We looked like those meddling kids on Scooby Doo, sneaking through our house in our pj's, trying to catch a thug bare handed (bright plan, don'tcha think?)
Anyway, where was I? Ah, cobwebs in blogland. Yes, it seems I have little time to write at present. Okay, so truth be told, some of the time I do have has been spent on my new passion, scrapbooking. I find the creative process, combined with documenting family life and family history, to be extremely enjoyable. So crop, paper, scissors, that's one of the things sucking up my time.
I do plan to blog more once summer arrives (and all three of you better plan on being here when that time comes, ya hear?)
And I'll have to let you know how our first venture to family camp goes. We toured the facilities last week and booked our cabin. Now we wait. I got to attend 3 camps as a kid;
1. Camp Iss-See-Kes (with my 5th grade CCD/PSR class),
2. Working the riding stables at Clare-Mar Lakes (no pay; my friends and I got to stay there for free in exchange for being stable hands),
3. And several cheerleading camps, including one on the beautiful campus of Wittenberg University.
Honestly, I had a BLAST at all three camps. Loved every minute of those experiences. And now my husband and children will get a small taste of that. I'm so excited for all of us. There will be the requisite tie-dying and S'mores over the fire. But there will also be river hikes, repelling, archery and target shooting (bb guns), zip lines, and alpine tower climbing, field games and mess hall dinners. Stay tuned.
Finally, a few bunkerisms. My Bunker gal, Olivia, made up a story in school the other day. It was about a boy in a canoe who shot an arrow at the moon. The moon broke open like an egg shell,
"and that's how we got the menorah."
(Me, confused) "The menorah???"
"Uh huh. You know. And it danced and all."
"Uh,..hmmm,...so,...a dancing menorah??? Liv, honey, do you know what the menorah is and what its significance is, beginning in the Old Testament?"
I went on to explain and she quickly realized her error.
"Oh! (giggle, giggle) Not the menorah. No, my story tells how we got the
Men-Northern lights."
And just to demonstrate that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...
I was talking about a particular hymn with Carl tonight and he assured me that George Bernard Shaw sang it.
You knoooooow, silly. George Bernard Shaw.
Better known as George Beverly Shea. LOL!!!!!!!!!

Pone...good to hear from you again. I'm thinking of shutting down the blog about birds due to lack of traffic. It takes allot of research to get it done and with little interest now that spring is in full swing I'm thinking of dumping it and devoting the time to flying. It's not etched in stone yet still just considering it. I'll let you know what I decide.
Loved this post, as usual. You are one funny chick, Toni! I loved the image you painted about being the meddling kids from Scooby Doo! Genius! Your turns of phrases always crack me up.
But seriously? That scrapbook page of Brandon? Seriously? So, um, when's your spread coming out in Creating Keepsakes? Did you hand-bead that "A"? And what about the glitter-glue letters? And the cut-out design behind the picture? Not to mention the sewing. OK, I have two things to say to you. I hope and pray that this page took more than a few minutes and you didn't just dash it off (it would have taken me several hours!) and I thought you said you didn't like to put just one picture on a page. What size is the page? Is the freedom to do so the reason you love being about to use different sizes?
OK, my rant is over, my talented, creative friend who scraps as well as she writes.
I talked to Carl Monday night. He said you've been working like dogs in your yard lately. I have too! I'm going over to work in my grandma's yard today. Call me! We GOTTA get together!!!!
I am glad to hear that you slept throught the earthquake. I have family in Indiana and you would think that world was coming to an end. But it seems like for you these type of natural disasters don't seem to phase you. Must be that natural mother in you we just seem to go with the flow of every thing after the third baby.
Great to see you back. I feel like I just made no sense. I am going to blame it on the pregnancy hormones they can make you a little scatterbrained.
Susan
You are SO funny! I have missed your posts, but can totally relate to blogging getting pushed aside do to all the busyness of life. It happens here, as well! I chuckled about you missing the earthquake because apparently people around here felt it, too. But not me. I, like you, slept right through it. All I can say is ignorance is bliss.
The scrapbook page is AMAZING. You are inspiring me to get back on the bandwagon once this marathon is over!
And thanks for the encouragement about Saturday...I really need it!
I don't even want to talk about the earthquakes because, really, next to tornados, nothing scares me more. Of course, where I live, if we had a big one, the Rockies would come crashing down on us and I probably wouldn't live long enough to be scared.
That's probably not going to happen. Right?
Uh oh. The scrapbook fever. Girl, you're in trouble. When it hit me, I hid myself in my craft room for TWO YEARS and scrapbooked. I did the most amazing journals for both my daughters, three huge books each, of their lives from the delivery room to their college graduations.
Then I woke up. LOL
Good luck. It's very, very addictive.
LOL! Sniz, yes. Yes, this page took several hours (though the beading goes lightning fast; I'll spill later to ya on that). And the sewing...I bought a used mini machine at Goodwill and gave'er a whirl. Love it. However, that being said? Look closer. You're looking at the back of the stitches because I messed up the lo on the other side. Not being one to throw away an otherwise good piece of cardstock, I just flipped it over and began anew. ;)
Now the exacto work took awhile and is not fun for me. It's just that I wanted something to represent wings to me and that's what I came up with (impressionistic though it may be).
As for not liking a single photo on the page, that is still true for me but only for 12x12. Out of all the 12x12 lo's I've done, only one has a single photo on it. And unless a double lo is involved, I believe this lo of Brandon is the only 8x11 I've done with a single photo.
I do my single photos on 8x8 now, and put all three sizes in d-ring albums. That, I *love*, as it frees me to scrap on whatever size my photos call for. And speaking of,...when, oh WHEN are we scrapping together? We might have to try an evening crop at Cord Camera one of these days.
Blessings,
~Toni~
Toni,
Any advice on what to do and see in San Fransisco for one day? (while we wait to catch a red-eye flight home)
Like Sniz, I love your kids from Scooby Doo bit. And I love your scrapbook page! When bloggers get pulled into another form of creative expression, it can only be a good thing. And please share more of your gorgeous lay-outs.
